Number 20

10.2 miles + 5 hours 15 minutes + 3800 feet of elevation gain = Carter Dome (and Mt. Hight) as my 20th of the 48 4000′ peaks in New Hampshire.

I started along the 19 mile brook trail, hiked up to Carter Lakes, and then did the incredibly steep ascent to Carter Dome. I normally consider about 1000 feet of elevation per trail mile to be a moderately steep ascent. The hike from the lake to Carter Dome was about 1600 feet of elevation gain in only 1.2 miles. Carter Dome itself doesn’t have great views, but after hiking north on the ridge I was happy to discover Mt. Hight does. After hiking over Mt. Hight I returned to the car via the Carter Dome Trail. Pictures are available here.

The weather was fabulous although it was a bit hazy which shows in the photos. The views from Mt. Hight are absolutely amazing — 360 degrees including some Maine lakes, the Carter Range, and the entire northern presidential range including Tuckerman and Huntington Ravines.

Beej,

Sounds like you had a great time. I’ve climbed Carter Dome several time but only in the winter. Did you drop by Carter Hut?

No, I didn’t stop by the hut. I was concerned about when I’d finish the loop and didn’t stop for much other than the views from Hight.
